Hey everyone,
I am very new the storage realm and am looking for some input on how to proceed. I am currently looking to move away from our host based storage to some shared storage (NAS or SAN) that would provide the ability to easily offer different storage profiles for our development team to test configurations, as well as high availability features for our critical infrastructure (which both NAS and SAN should do from what I have read so far). Additionally, I would like the ability to easily create storage profiles that point to different areas to spin-up a VM on a set of 15K RPM drive, 10k, 7.2k, SSDs, etc.
I don't have very much experience with Enterprise NAS or SAN solutions, so I am not 100% sure what the pros and cons are of each. I have heard SANs have kinda a steep learning curve but are the performance powerhouses, while NAS is cheaper and easier to initially setup. The problem is, would NAS be able to do storage profiles as well as allow for easy customization of "storage tiers" to provide to my dev team? Do you/VMware have any preferred recommendations on which of the two they have a preference to work with?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the subject!
