I've put together a new VMware Launchpad page on my website. This page has links for everything you will need to support VI3 (News, blogs, support links, references, etc.) You can bookmark this page or set it as your default homepage so you have easy access to the common links that you use. If you have any suggestions for additions to this page just let me know. Thanks!

VI3 Book

Anyone heard anything on this lately? The website has no new info (http://www.vi3book.com) and Barnes & Noble had a release date of October 2007 but it says out of stock, they also do not have a picture of the book which is unusual. Amazon does not even have it listed. At this rate VI4 might be released before this long awaited book...

Hello,

I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Corey Romero and I just recently joined the VMware Communities Team as a web producer. My responsibilities are maintaining the static and some dynamic pages in the Communities. Just recently I updated the Community tab http://www.vmware.com/communities/content/ to highlight blogs. If you have any suggestions I'm always open to new ideas. I'm very pleased to be part of the VMware Community and look forward to interacting with the Community.

PowerShell and Plugins: VMware Communities Roundtable Podcast #6

We had a great call this morning on the sixth episode of the little podcast we like to call "VMware Communities Roundtable." Our focus was on automation and scripting of VMware Virtual Infrastructure. Joining us were Carter Shanklin, product manager for the VI Toolkit (for Windows) that uses PowerShell and a very useful set of commands to make a new tool that should be in every VI admin's toolbox. Also joining us was Andrew Kutz, VI programmer, plugin-maker, and toolkit maker extraordinaire.

Sunquest copath application loosing connections on open port

Hey all,

We have a vm with sunquest copath application running on it.   After an upgrade from 2.4 to version 4 there seems to be issues with a port, and loosing connections.  After they created a new port they are having fewer issues.

I was curious if anyone else is running this healthcare application and if they ar having this issue.  Our application person says that they know of a memory leak in the past, and I think that this issue is the result of upgrading, but I wanted to do due diligence!

Respectfully,

Matthew

Private Community RSS Feeds working

For those of you who are having trouble authenticating private community RSS feeds please see the steps below.

1. Download any RSS reader that will authenticate an RSS feed URL. (I'm using Feedreader.)

2. When entering your username make sure you are using your Community ID and not your email address as we are authenticating through Jive and not VMware.com.

3. Your password should be the same password as used to login to Communities.

Hope this helps!

VMware's Maritz On Finding Humility- (Any to Any)how can VmWare contribute better??

Can't turn on a new vm on rdm with an iso to build the os

Hey guys,

I am on ESX 4 build 261974.

If I try to build a vm on an RDM using an iso file of the OS the vm won't even turn on.  If I use the same iso file on a new vm that uses vmdk, it works fine.  I have tried this on two different clusters and been able to replicate the problem.  I downloaded the iso and found that it works perfectly in the two different clusters when used with a vmdk and on my workstation.  Has anyone else seen this?  I have a ticket open with vmware support   1583196201

Let me know, doesn't matter if it is linux or windows.

ESXi 4.1

This is a fresh VM that I setup from an ISO of Win2k3. It is not a clone. I've also never snapshot'd it.

I finally figured out how to run vmkfstools -x check [file].vmdk and the result is "error free". Expanding from vmkfstools fails with the same error. I've rebooted the VM and it does not help. If I try to expand while the VM is running, the VM crashes and I get the same error. I've tried expanding with the VM off and get the same error. I've looked through the datastore and it contains no snapshots.

The VMs would be XP pro, Ubuntu desktop, ubuntu server with an extra for anything.  I'm a bit new to the hardware requirements so could anyone suggest a cheap cpu for this?

Drivers for OSD deployments

We are using vSphere 4.x.  Within vSphere we have built a Windows 2008r2 server that is running SCCM 2007 R2.  We also have many Windows XP VM's.  We need all required drivers for SCCM OSD to work with the VMWare client machines.  We need a working solution.

what happens to the MAC address of the VM when we do the P2V conversion. The destination MAC address will be of the same as of Source MAC or will be that of a new one.?

Question on how to setup the network when using 2 10Gb connections.

Hello,

we are starting to think to deploy a 10 Gb architecture with some single port CNA from QLOGIC (2 per server), connected through some Nexus 5xxx cisco switches and using a Netapp Filer.

After having started to look for some best practices on how to setup all the vswitches and physical stuff, I have 2 way of thinking and I have no proof of which is the best one. Here are the 2 way of thinking that I saw :

     - keep 2 gigabits ports for management network, vMotion in a dedicated switch and on another switch mapped to the 10 Gb Network to connect the production network for VM.

     - create a new switch connected to the 10 Gb cards and create port group and management networks for all the production & managmeent traffic.

Do some of you have an experience return on this kind of implementation ?

Thanks in advance for you advices.

Philippe.
