DR LUN replication?

$

Quick question,

Currently how do you manage differing UUIDs between the Primary and DR sites?

Specifically I'd like to hear about experiences with IBM Hardware, DS 8300 and DS 4700 SAN infrastructure and Global Mirror/ Metro Mirror.

The UUID is derived from FOUR parts;

1. Creation time in seconds since 1-1-1970

2. The TSC Time; an internal time stamp counter kept by the CPU.

3. Random Number

4. MAC Address of Server that formatted the VMFS volume

This would mean that the UUIDs of the LUNs presented in DR will always be different then the primary site.

My concern is that with the UUID being hardcoded inside the VMX file, in DR invocation there is a large degree of manual work to repoint the VM to it's target VMDK files etc...

Any thoughts?

VMFS Sizing, Snapshots, Metadata.

So I've got a pretty well bedded in infrastructure, running some 2000 Production VMs, 100 Hosts, 318 VLANs and 975 LUNs across 21 clusters.

VMs run across multiple LUNs either configured to host single or mulitple VMs dependant on purpose (OS, PF, DS) and SAN replication status.  Sizing of those LUNS has always been based upon number of VMs * VMDK size + VSWAP Size + 10% overhead for metadata (which may be a little large, but having had to support the infrastructure when it wasn't clearing the journal and LUNs ran out of space, I would much rather be safe than sorry).

This estate is in the process of being upgraded, and to this end I'm taking a close look at VDR to backup a portion of the estate.  This will obviously require VMs to be relocated to larger LUNs as snapshot space is not factored in.  I will be looking to use the formula below to provide sizing recomendations for the OS LUNs and would appreciate some feedback as to what other people are doing, be it a formula or a finger in the air

The below is just for a LUN housing OS' (VMX files) as this is the default location for snapshots, for this reason the formula uses data about VMDKs housed on other LUNs.

The formula assumes a maximum snapshot size of 15% of the largest VMDK that makes up the machines hosted from the OS LUN, however this figure can of course be factored up for VMs with a higher rate of change.

((Number of VMDKs on the LUN * Largest VMDK on the LUN)(VSWAP*Number of resident VMs))((Largest VMDK on the hosted VMs * number of VMs)/100*15)

The resultant number that comes out of the above has a further addition of 10% for Metadata etc, and is then rounded up.

Thoughts?  How do you derive LUN sizing?

HPE Custom Image for ESXi 5.5.0 U3b GA

HP C7000 enclosure

I have 4 new GL 460C Gen9 blades to install.

My current environment contains 3 GL 460C Gen8 blades with VMware ESXi, 5.5.0, 2403361 installed.

The plan is to swap out the Gen8 blades for the Gen9.

I plan on installing blade # 4 then migrating all vm's to Host 2,3, 4 then shutting down host #1, then firing up one of the other new Gen9 blades in the place of Host #1 give it the same identity as Host #1.

Then rebalance the load back onto host 1,3,4 moving all VM's to other Host and continue until all are replaced.

Here is my question: VCenter and the current host are at 5.5.0 U2D,  what I have to install on the Blade's OS is HPE Custom Image for ESXi 5.5.0 U3b GA.

Is ESXi 5.5.0 U3b compatible with my current VCenter and host?

I wanted to pose this question to VMware Tech Support, but I find Phone Tech Support lacking! No matter how many times I place a support call, they always seem to call me while I'm driving home.

Thanks

Hello,

I just installed VMware workstation pro 12.5.7 to run my Oracle training server. However, the host virtual adaptor doesn't want to be checked once I press "apply". I want to keep the virtual adaptor checked after clicking apply. How can I fix that.

I tried to elaborate my issue in the pictures attached below. Please read the titles and see them.

Documenting your environment

We are having a huge environment with multiple Daqtacenters at different locations.

We use SRM,Cicso load balancer,VDI,ESX,VC etc.We host Linux, Novell, Windows and Solaris Vms.

Documenting such such a huge environment is a big pain. I was woindering is there any kind of software which we can customise as per our needs

to document information like - History of the VM - Where a VM engineer can record all the activities that took place inside the VM. like troubleshooting, addition of resources

If there is a VM that needs to be under SRM, we can record that, if the VM is going to use Cisco GSS we can record that etc...

We can use Excel but it cannot be used at a enterprise level.

I am not looking for any monitoring software. This is more towards documenting your environment.

Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Setting Multi Writer Flag for Oracle RAC on vSphere without any downtime

$

Oracle RAC Cluster using ASM for storage would require the shared disks to be accessed by all nodes of the RAC cluster.

The multi-writer option in vSphere allows the VMFS-backed disks to be shared by multiple VM's simultaneously. By default, the simultaneous multi-writer "protection" is enabled for all .vmdk files ie all VM's have exclusive access to their .vmdk files.  So in order for all of the Oracle RAC VM's to access the shared vmdk's , the multi-writer protection needs to be disabled.

KB Article 1034165 provides more details on how to set the multi-writer option manually to allow VM's to share vmdk's (link below).

<a href="http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1034165" title="Multi-Writer"></a>

The above method would require the VM's to be powered off before the multi-writer option can be set in the .vmx configuration file. This means that the Oracle RAC instance would have to be shutdown and the VM completely powered off before the option can be set leading to an Instance outage.

Oracle DBA's would rather a method where they could add shared disks on the fly to a running Oracle RAC cluster without any downtime.

A colleague and I working for VMware PSO some time back (now I have moved under the Global Center Of Excellence group ) wrote a POWERCli script called the “addSharedDisk” which adds

a new shared disk to the existing Oracle RAC nodes along with setting the multi-writer flag setting , setting the disks as independent-persistent and eager-zero thick formatting.

This script can be used to add shared disk on the fly while the Oracle RAC Clusters is up and running thus avoiding any outage.

Disclaimer:

- This is an generic script provided and can be customized as per your requirement

- This script is provided for educational purposes only , please use at your own risk

- No Support will be provided for this script

- All values provided in this script is for example only, you would need to provide real values

This script accepts at the command prompt

- The number of shared disks to be created( maximum 55)

- The number of nodes that you need this shared disk be added to

Currently

-the script places all shared VMDK files in the same datastore as the boot disk VMDK files. This can be customized to place shared vmdk's on different datastores for IO load balancing

-the script can be further customized to place vmdk's on different SCSI controllers.

-the script has the logic to check the network requirements of the Oracle RAC interconnect adapters(assumption of the script is 2 Private Adapters are deployed per VM) . (can be removed or commented out if not required)

Hi Guys,

I need to understand what are your top 10 interview questions that you ask when hiring for a VMware engineer position. I am working on piece of work where i am assisting some sr. managers in my organisation to compile a list of questions that can be asked in an interview for above mentioned position.

I have noticed some existing threads already on this but i am after some up to date\current  information on this.

Shutdown a MSA2000 on powerfailure

$

Hello,

i am working on the emergency procedures of my company's server room and i am wondering how to proper shutdown the HP MSA2000 which is connected via fiber to our two ESX 4.0 hosts.

Reguarding the two ESX hosts everything works fine: the UPS' software agents detect the power failure and gracefull shutdown them, but what about the HP MSA2000?

Googling around didn't help me as weel as the HP's documentation.

My (not working) solution at the moment is: on the vcenter host  the ups' software agent executes a script that checks if the two ESX host are poweroff and then tries to shutdown the MSA2000 via SSH. The problem is about the MSA2000 that seems to do not accept the "shutdown both" command via SSH (like any other command).

I am using plink.exe to perform the SSH connection (it works) and execute the command (it doesn't work).

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

(Sorry for my english)

Building a NFS server for 2 ESXI servers

Experience:  Junior vMware user. Normal level linux and microsoft system administrator.

I want to do:  for High Availabiltiy build 1 NFS SERVER  for 2 esxi servers
Budget: as possible using available hardware  and using the opensource.
Why NFS: I think SAN  is very expensive.

Required  Virtual Machines:

  • 6 x Microsoft Server 2008
  • 5 x Windows 7 Pro
  • 5 x Elastix Voip
  • 2 x Web hosting

Available hardware:

2 x 1U Poweredge R610 for ESXI 5.1 server ( 8 x Gbit Nic)

Details:

  • 2 x Xeon E5640 CPU
  • 96 GB DDR3 Memory
  • Onboard        4 x 1 Gbit Nic
  • 1 Pci-E  Intel  4 x  1 Gbit Nic
  • 16 GB SD mermoy card for ESXI boot

1 x 2U Supermicro X7DB8 server for NFS server  ( 8 x Gbit Nic)

Details:

  • 2 x Xeon E5420
  • 48 GB memory
  • 1 x Hardware raid SATA/SAS controller  (LSI 3ware 9750)
  • 8 x 3.5” 2 TB SATA disks
  • 4 X 2.5” 256 gb SSD direct attached on mainbord (no raid)
  • Onboard 2 x 1 Gbit Nic
  • 1 Pci-e Intel   2 x 1 Gbit Nic
  • 1 Pci-e Intel  4 x  1 Gbit Nic
  • 16 GB SD mermoy card for OS boot

Questions

  • How need I connect NIC’s for NFS connection?
  • I have not so much experience with NFS. Can you explain to me, for a stable and good connection which network hardware I need?
    • What should minimum network connection between esxi and nfs server for 20 virtual machines?
    • Can i use Network Teaming? to get 2 or more Gbit connection?

  • My idea is on each ESXI servers create a new vSwitch  and add minimal 2x Nic tot his vSwitch and this 2 Nic’s connect with Cross-over netwrok cables directly to the NFS server. I don’t know how, but i need advice like Network Teaming option etc. Can you please give me more advice about this.
  • Which software can I better use on the NFS server? Openfiler or FreeNAS or something else please your advises.
  • What you think about hardware of NFS server? Supermicro X7DB8 enough?

Thanks in advance

About Nested Virtualization

ESXi 6.5 was installed on the virtual server.

However, even if you enter the URL of ESXi, the setting screen is not displayed.

Currently, OS is not installed on the virtual server, so I would like to use external IP address and configure from outside, how can I do?

Thank you.

How to add Virtual Serial Port to a VM in ESX 6.5 from Linux command line or API?

$

Hi,

I'm developing a script to import an OVF VM to an ESX 6.5 host.

I'm using ovftool command to run the import.

When I try to pass Virtual Serial Port properties (retreieved from .vmx file when I did manually via vSphere Client GUI),

ovftool returned warning:

$ ovftool \

--name="Test04" \

--acceptAllEulas \

-ds=datastore1 \

-dm=thin \

--net:'Network 1=VM Network' \

--prop:serial0.fileType='network' \

--prop:serial0.fileName='telnet://:7004' \

--prop:serial0.yieldOnMsrRead='TRUE' \

--prop:serial0.present='TRUE' \

./Test04.ovf \

vi://root:PASSWORD@172.18.125.43

Opening OVF source: ./FortiGate-VM64.ovf

Opening VI target: vi://root@172.18.125.43:443/

Deploying to VI: vi://root@172.18.125.43:443/

Transfer Completed

Warning:

- OVF property with key: 'serial0.fileName' does not exists.

- OVF property with key: 'serial0.fileType' does not exists.

- OVF property with key: 'serial0.present' does not exists.

- OVF property with key: 'serial0.yieldOnMsrRead' does not exists.

Completed successfully

And Virtual Serial Port is not added after the ovftool import.

After ovftool import,

I have also tried manully edit .vmx file by appending 4 lines at the end:

serial0.fileName = "telnet://:7003"

serial0.fileType = "network"

serial0.present = "TRUE"

serial0.yieldOnMsrRead = "TRUE"

but it still has no effect.

How can I add a "Virtual Serial Port" to an ESX 6.5 VM

without going through vSphere Client GUI or Web GUI?

Is it possibe to use vim-cmd from ESX host shell?

or any solution in Linux?

my DataCenter configured as following:

     1.  Physical Switch connected to 3 Physical Server.

          vCenter Server IP: 192.168.10.10

two ESXi Physical Hosts: IP: 192.168.10.11/12.

      2.  My laptop connected to this physical network, IP: 192.168,10.100.

      3.  My two Physical Hosts configured with one Standard vSwitcher0, uplink VMNIC0,  portgroup MYLAN vLan ID=162,  vmk0 vLan ID=162.

      4.  I created two nested ESXi vHost on the two Physical Host, assigned IP 192.168.10,101/102, gateway 192.168.10.1

      5.  Standard vSwitch0 on the two vHost, only VM NETWORK portgroup, all with default vLan ID =0.

      6.  I create VM on nested vHost, and assigned the VM using VM NETWORK, also assigned the IP: 192.168.10.201, gateway 192.168.10.1

But from my VM,  I cannot ping 192.168.10.1,  also I cannot ping the VM (x.x.x.201) from my laptop.

I can ping my two nested vHost from my laptop, also can login the VM console through my nest vHost.

from my vHost world, my network is configured as EST (external swith tagging).

from my Physical Host world, my network is configured as VST (virtual switch tagging),

Theoritically my configuration should be correct, but it don't work.

I'm new comer to nested VMWare  world.   I'm appreciated for any suggestion and help.
